Happy Birthday, Horses!
At midnight last night, while you were sipping sparkling wine (or, if you’re like most of my recently parented friends, sleeping) all North American Thoroughbreds turned another year older. That simplifies book keeping, and it also explains the breedin’ season. To quote one wise book I once read on breeding and racing, “A colt born on December 31 is a disaster,” because it means the poor thing is two before he’s even really figured out how to walk in a straight line. No Derby for you!
So from my bed of hay to yours, here’s hoping none of you breeders had a late night on New Year’s Eve in the foaling barn.
