Spoiled With Brilliance
By winning the Woodward at Saratoga, Curlin inched closer to the all time money title with his sixth victory on dirt in a row. (We say it that way because it’s way, way more impressive than adding in his rather inconvenient recent loss on the turf.)
It was an important race not only for the win, but for the way it was won: Not exactly in record time. Curlin was running behind Past the Point, who was setting the pace– and who the handicappers sent off at 40-1. He lumbered down the home stretch, but he lumbered down in front at the wire. His jockey Robby Albarado told The Bloodhorse, “He spoils us with his brilliance.”
Speed is important. But grinding out a win when it seems to be slipping away is even more so.
