Illegal Substance Fun at the Olympics

Published by marybethellis at 11:59 pm under As It Happens Edit This

Attention on banned substances in horse sports has now taken a literal worldwide stage:  Three of the four-footed members of the Olympics equestrian teams have tested positive for capsaicin.  That’s a pain reliever– kind of super-BenGay for horses–which is banned.  Teams from Ireland, Brazil, and Germany were affected.

And so was Norway, which took home the team bronze for finishing third in the multi-event routine, which includes dressage, cross-country jumping, and show jumping.  A stripped medal means that the Swiss team would move up and claim the hardware.

These situations have got to be unbelievably awkward.  Do the athletes have to, like, box up the medals and give them back?  What if they lost them already?  You think Marion Jones still had all of hers within easy reach?
