My Old Man Can Not-Win the Triple Crown Faster Than Your Old Man
Meet Ritzy Jones, everyone, the two-year-old son of 2004 Triple Crown threat Smarty Jones, who lost the Belmont to Birdstone, and, like so many standout three-year-olds, never saw a starting gate again. It’s mares and mounting for you, young man!
Now his offspring are hitting the paddock. Dad is standing stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky and fits in fan visits on his PDA, with Derby-time visitors booking out the Smarty Jones tours six months in advance. One of his daughters, La Equivocada, has already won one down at Camarero Race Track in Puerto Rico; Ritzy is training at Keeneland (ritzy, indeed–but what does his stall smell like?) and a few others are gearing up at various tracks around the U.S.
Word has it that Big Brown will also lay hoof at Three Chimneys when the time comes. Man, I would love to be at Meet The Herd cocktail party:
“Aren’t you a little short for a race horse?”
“At least I didn’t come in last in New York.”
“Oh, shut up.”
