Better Than Fiction
Here’s what I like about jockeys: First, you wonder. Then, they answer.
Most people outside the game–geez, even outside the Kentucky game– have probably never heard of Kris Prather (that’s with a “K”, and that’s as in “she’s a girl.) No, she was never in the Derby. No, she doesn’t appear in ESPN ads. Even so, she rode at Churchill and led the nation, socking away 242 wins.
Then something happened which happens to so many, so many– she had a serious accident which, for want of better phrasing, ripped her left arm right out of its socket. Away went her medical clearance.
But now she’s writing young adult novels, complete with appearances at Cincinnati-area Starbucks, which means, of course, that she’s Made It.
I’ll wager she’d rather be on the back of a horse. But good for Kris… she found the keyboard instead of the bottle or the needle, and may the text therapy do her good. Write, baby, write.
