Deal With It, Alex

Published by marybethellis at 3:07 pm under As It Happens, Fun With Jockeys Edit This

Tomorrow’s ten-furlong Hollywood Gold Cup is actually being televised by ESPN2 (coverage starts at 7 PM Eastern), and I recommend watching if only to toast the fact that someone out there is acknowledging that, you know, this horse racing thing, it extends beyond Triple Crown season.  Even if it is The Deuce.

Jockey Fun to watch for:   The mighty and very nearly John McCain-aged Surf Cat, who is six, is slated to appear.  He’ll be ridden by David Flores, which is exciting because 1) people like to say “Flores” and 2) Surf Cat’s regular jockey, Alex Solis has been set dooooown, presumably due to a third-place finish in the California Stakes last month.  When asked to comment, trainer Bruce Headley clarified the situation in the great detail which only trainers can provide:  “That’s one of those deals,” he announced.  Well then.
