…And the Horse You Rhode In On

As a person who grew up across the river from Kentucky, lived for five years in Florida, and is currently living in Virginia, I’m always checking the entries list to see where a runner is bred. It says a lot about the foal, you know. The Florida ones like to listen to Buffett in the evenings and trainers of Virginia horses are forever trying to get them on the nicotine patch after a year or so of eating tobacco-infused local grass.

Horses from unusual states are my favorites– the Arizonans, the Oklahomans. Today I came across one bred in Rhode Island, which… seriously? Rhode Island? Where was there room to feed and foal it? When it first got to the turf of Aquaduct in outer Queens, was its first reaction, “Look at all this ROOM!”?

This Rhode Island baby is more what I imagined. Her name is Mona. She’s a miniature pony.
