The Jinx Is In?

Published by marybethellis at 11:22 am under Just Thinking Edit This

Oh, man, are we here already? The Big Brown Can’t Be Beat Train is streaking out of the station less than forty-eight hours in?

I’ll tell you the last time everyone assured me that we were looking at the next Triple Crown winner. Horse named Smarty Jones.

I’m watching the coverage closely, and despite a few articles like this here and there in the sports section, there hasn’t been a great tidal wave of Triple Crown attention in the mass media over the weekend. Drudge stuck Big Brown waaaay below the mast, beneath some breaking Indiana Jones-related news and pictures of Florida wildfires. But then again, the Belmont takes place on June 7, three weeks away, which in the American media psyche is a geologic age. So it’s coming.

Here’s a rare moment in which I can whip out my political science degree inside my horseracing blog: You know what happens on June 3? Montana, New Mexico, and South Dakota will hold their presidential primaries, at which point McCain will be officially installed as the Republican candidate and we will at last finalize this endless matter of Clinton and Obama– unless, of course, Florida and Michigan insist upon continuing to be problem children. But the issue should be well and truly settled, and three whole entire days will have gone by with nothing for the media to talk about. And that is when you will start to see the Big Brown True Hollywood Story popping up on E!
